OVER OBELISK

SIBLING

The John Batman obelisk, erected in 1881, awkwardly stands at the north-east corner of the Queen Victoria Market, engraved “Circumspice [look around you]”. SIBLING constructs a convoluted and architectonic framing device around the monument, allowing it to be viewed from a range of angles to privilege views that may reveal the monument’s contested histories. Throughout the week, this framework will pull away from the structure itself to form a series of follies that will not only enable public occupation of this structure, but move around the market site and participate in other artist’s activities.
